                     "NEW July3rd"  Lessons from Lin
In today's hand, Lin points out that partner's and declarer's bids gave him a road map for the defense.  Sometimes it is better to delay forcing declarer to ruff a trick thus getting to a position where you or your partner can can execute an "Uppercut" in trumps thus forcing him to lose control of the hand. The lesson is to draw a picture in your mind of the probable cards partner and declarer hold by their bidding and play and then plan a defense that will exploit that holding as Lin did in today's hand..               New July 25th        Hands of the Month

This is a special opportunity for members to see some interesting hands played by some of our Club's players.  Some hands are from play at the Club, some from Sectional competition and Regional competition.  Come take a look and maybe learn something helpful in the future. This Month's hands, provided by Lars Bruun-Andersen & Charlotte Falk, are an example of how experts always seem to find a way to make a difficult hand or get to those slams that the rest of us miss. Take a look More.....

Lin Goldstein & Dan Green win July Unit Game

Challenging their final opponents with defensive bids and effective play, Dan and Lin won the July Unit Game with a score of 163.5 match points, a 61.93% game.  A slim 1 1/2 MPs back were Bud and Dottie Brewer who were second with 162 matchpoints or 61.36%. The Brewers had a lead of 7 1/2 match points over Lin and Dan going in to the last two boards and after scoring a penalty of 500 points and giving up a club part score thought they had persevered.  In fact those two scores gave Lin and Dan a 9 MPs point margin for the round thus giving them enough points to climb past the Brewers.  One half point back were Nels Erickson and Conrad Evans coming within a hair of overtaking the second place finishers.  In fourth place were Virginia Kellermyer & Donna Mcleod.  Tied for fifth, sixth and seventh were Eunice Parent & Marlene Davis, Charlotte Falk &, Atam Lalchandani and June Lucas & Marie Johnson.  In the B strata, Elizabeth Jenkins & Pat Green finished 4th with Tom Howell & Paul Blumberg 5th. In the C Strata, David Weinberg & Mark Lundblad were 1st with Bobbi Kornbluth & Diane Bishoff 2nd.  Regular Director Kathy Lane was unable to manage the game due to being ill but Kathy Evens stepped in and handled the job with skill and aplomb.

                            Instant Matchpoint Game Scheduled

Kathy Lane has scheduled an "Instant Masterpoint" game for Thursday evening at 6:30PM September 16th.  An Instant Masterpoint game is one in which the winners are awarded "Gold Points".  If the format is a Mitchell game then each of the NS and EW winners will receive a Gold point. The hands are pre dealt and the best contract is pre determined and you are scored based on 100 being top.  So after you play the hand, you open the travelling score and the travelling score will tell you how many match points you received on the board.  By the end of the game, usually before the Director has finished imputing the scores in the computer, you will know your own results.  A really fun game.  (The regularly scheduled Wednesday evening game will be cancelled to allow the switch in evenings with the Chess Club that normally meets on Thursday.)
