Duplicate Bridge Lessons

If you have been playing rubber bridge with friends from time to time and want to stretch your capabilities in the game of contract bridge, here is the opportunity to learn the rudiments of Duplicate Bridge competition.  Kathy Lane is offering offers private lessons or group lessons on the basics of duplicate bridge and its competition.  Everyday at the Reno Bridge Center and occasionally at Sectional and Regional tournaments held in Truckee Valley and Carson Valley Bridge Clubs, bridge players come together to compete in  the game of Duplicate Bridge.  Since all the hands are pre-dealt in these tournaments, each partnership sitting North and South plays 2-4 hands against each of the East West pairs in the tournament.  After completing play of 24 or so hands, each North-South pair's score on those hands is compared with all the other North-South players playing the same hands and they earn one point for each score better than the other pairs or one half point for a tie.  All these scores are then added up to produce a pair's total score and the highest total is declared the winner for their direction.  This method eliminates the problem that occurs when one pair gets the better of all the hands dealt in a total score or Rubber bridge game.

Bidding with systems and conventions that, although fully disclosed to the opponents, are more sophisticated, allow each accomplished partnership to be more effective in reaching a good contract or defeating a poor one by the opponents.  After learning the basics of contract bridge, every student will benefit by taking instruction to learn how to apply different conventions or recognize the nuances of the game.  After adding some of these "bells and whistles" to their game, most players will begin to score better in competition.
